Training resources

The ARRIVE training resources are designed for anyone involved in reading or writing academic literature, helping to understand, assess and implement best practice in the reporting of animal research. These resources are flexible and can be used for self-paced, self-directed learning or integrated into group exercises, training programmes or workshops.

What is the ARRIVE manuscript review?

The ARRIVE manuscript review exercises are tailored for both individuals and groups to critically evaluate the quality of reporting in preclinical animal research. Each exercise involves reading and analysing an open-access animal research paper, then answering questions to determine whether the authors have transparently reported their work according to the standards set by the ARRIVE Essential 10. These free, online exercises test understanding of what constitutes high-quality reporting of in vivo research and provide additional feedback to help discuss and assess the implications of current reporting practices on the reliability of the science and the reproducibility of the methods.

The manuscript review exercises are based on experiments from a variety of fields using different animal models and are suitable for use in tutor groups, journal clubs or for individual study. By engaging with these exercises, users will enhance their critical analysis skills and improve their ability to evaluate scientific literature.

How can you use the ARRIVE manuscript review?

As an individual learner, you can access the ARRIVE manuscript review at any time for self-paced and self-directed learning. Simply download and read the open access paper, try out the questions and reflect on the feedback provided.

Training providers, lecturers and journal club organisers can use the ARRIVE manuscript review in group exercises or as a workshop activity. We suggest you provide the paper to participants ahead of time to maximise group discussion. During the session, each participant can access the exercise on their own device and submit their answers, with the online feedback providing prompts and insights to support discussion and group learning.
